Yesterday morning I had the chance to watch part of an incredible heavy haulage operation. Allelys were moving a massive electrical transformer from Heysham Port on its journey all the way to Carlisle. I followed the convoy as far as Carnforth and even just that stretch was amazing to witness.
The Start at Heysham
I got to Heysham early to see the start of the move. The transformer was absolutely huge securely loaded onto a deep red trailer and ready to roll. Allelys green and blue wagons surrounded it lined up and looking sharp. The crew were busy with final checks and everything was clearly well-rehearsed and under control.
Up the M6 to Carnforth
Once the convoy got moving it joined the M6 and that’s where the scale of the operation really hit me. Even on a wide motorway, the transformer looked massive. With police escorts leading and following and support vehicles spaced along the route it moved steadily and carefully, taking up multiple lanes as needed.
Along the motorway bridges and verges people had gathered to watch with cameras, families with kids and plenty of people just pulled over to take a look. It’s not every day you see a load like that cruising up the M6.

My Final Stop at Carnforth
I followed the convoy as far as Carnforth where I watched the load continue on its way north. That’s where I wrapped up my morning but the convoy carried on towards its final destination in Carlisle. Even though I only saw a portion of the journey it gave me a real appreciation for the planning and precision involved.
Final Thoughts
Watching something that size move up the motorway was a reminder of just how much work goes into keeping our infrastructure running. Massive credit to Allelys and everyone involved in the move—the skill the timing and teamwork were seriously impressive.
If you ever get the chance to see a mega move like this in person even just for a short stretch like I did, definitely go for it. It’s not something you’ll forget any time soon.
