Learning the Shimadzu IR Reader – Another Step into Fabric Testing

Yesterday, I spoke about learning how to measure fabric using the Datacolor Spectro, and today, I’ve been introduced to another piece of equipment—the Shimadzu IR Reader. This device works differently from the Spectro, as it measures infrared light, which isn’t visible to the naked eye.

Geoff very kindly took the time to explain how it all works. The Shimadzu IR Reader analyses materials by shining infrared light through them and detecting how different wavelengths are absorbed or transmitted. Every material has a unique “fingerprint” in the infrared spectrum, so this helps identify substances and check for consistency in fabric composition.

It’s been fascinating to learn about these tools during the quieter months at work. Both the Spectro and the IR Reader play a crucial role in ensuring fabric quality, and it’s great to expand my knowledge beyond the dyeing process. I’m looking forward to getting more hands-on experience with these machines and seeing how they contribute to the overall production process.
